Acupressure Points for Migraine Headaches

Acupressure Points for Migraine Headaches

Eastern medicine teaches us that we can relieve just about any type of pain or ailments using our hands and pressure points that pinpoint the source of the affliction, or active points along an imaginary line called a "meridian." When these meridians are blocked, energy flow is stunted and pain or disease is the result. Acupressure is 1 such technique used to relieve the meridians of blockage and increase the flow of energy, which, in turn, releases endorphins, your body's natural pain killer. With a little knowledge of where the pressure points are in your body, you can relieve the pain of migraines using acupressure.

Method 1 : Forehead

  1. 1
Find the area midway between the middle of your eyebrows.
  2. 2
Apply deep pressure with your thumb or index finger moving upward.
  3. 3
Continue for 1 minute or until pain subsides, breathing deeply.

Method 2 of 5: Hand

  1. 1
Locate the "web" area between the thumb and index finger.
  2. 2
Squeeze this area using the thumb and index finger of your other hand.
  3. 3
Continue the pressure until your pain is relieved or you have reached 1 minute, breathing deeply.
  4. 4
Switch hands and apply pressure to the same area on the opposite hand.

Method 3 of 5: Neck

  1. 1
Place your fingers at the middle of your neck at the back of your head to find 2 more points for migraine pain.
  2. 2
Move your fingers to directly below your skull and the top of your neck.
  3. 3
Continue to move your fingers about 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5.0 cm) to the sides of your neck until you find a small indentation.
  4. 4
    Tilt your head slightly backward.
  5. 5
Apply pressure with your thumbs to this indented area and press upward for 2 minutes or until the pain stops. Be sure to breathe deeply during this procedure.
